A Salute to the Blue Band

October 24, 2004
Last year on Homecoming weekend, we broke ground for this building. This year, again on Homecoming weekend, we are here to dedicate what is now the permanent home of one of Penn State's most beloved groups: Our Blue Band.
For decades, the Blue Band has made athletic events and the entire college experience richer, more exciting, and more enjoyable. The Blue Band has provided us with world-class performances, high-energy entertainment, outstanding music, and a sense of tremendous pride in one of the finest college marching bands in the nation.
It is time we rewarded Blue Band members for their incredible display of loyalty, commitment, and talent. That day is today--with this facility that we dedicate exclusively for their use.
I would like to thank the Alumni Association and a great number of other supporters whose generosity and backing have made possible this wonderful new home for the Blue Band.
Each year, the Blue Band performs before more than a million people, including the fans who regularly pack Beaver Stadium. From the past to present day, Blue Band members have kept Penn State traditions alive, created new ones, brought generations together, and played a significant role in the history of Penn State.
This year, Penn State is marking a yearlong celebration of its Sesquicentennial --commemorating 150 years of excellence and our distinction as one of America's greatest universities. Within that history is the story of the Blue Band and its legacy of leadership and success. Since the founding of the Blue Band in 1899, nearly 10,000 students have participated.
Few other groups in the history of Penn State have led so many in song, brought thousands to their feet, and created such an enduring sense of pride and togetherness. For more than 100 years, Blue Band members have characterized the spirit, drive and excellence that defines Penn State -- and today it is our turn to salute them!
On behalf of the University, I offer sincere thanks and appreciation to the Penn State Blue Band--one of the greatest and most respected marching bands in the nation!
Congratulations on your new home!
